Learned Industriousness
Robert Eisenberger spent decades running animal and human studies on a simple question: does being rewarded for effort change how effortful future effort feels. His 1992 synthesis in Psychological Review answered yes. When high effort is reinforced, the sensation of effort itself picks up secondary reward value, which lowers its felt aversiveness, and the effect transfers: a person conditioned to push through one demanding task shows more persistence on a completely unrelated one.
This is the actual mechanism behind advice like “do 10% more before you quit.” Not willpower, not a muscle in the brain getting stronger, but a conditioned association: effort followed by a reward (finishing the page, closing the loop, seeing the print come out clean) makes the next bout of effort a little less aversive to start. It compounds the same way interval training compounds, one rep at a time, and it is one of the more replicated findings behind why practicing discomfort in one domain pays off in others.
