Cognitive Load

Also known as: mental load, processing load, cognitive effort, mental effort

The amount of mental effort required to process information and make decisions.

Cognitive Load

The amount of mental effort required to process information and make decisions. Cognitive load theory distinguishes between intrinsic load (inherent to the task), extraneous load (from poor design), and germane load (beneficial processing that builds understanding).

In product management, understanding cognitive load helps design interfaces and experiences that don’t overwhelm users’ mental capacity.
